Marketing executives at Amazon must rub their hands with glee after hearing the announcement of California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of his state's first-in national program to replace traditional textbooks on paper, with free textbooks in digital line. This is not a vision, the initiative is scheduled to begin in August 2009. The science and math textbooks are the first items to be replaced with other areas to follow.

A list initial rules of digital textbooks covering subjects such as geometry, trigonometry, calculus, physics, algebra, chemistry, biology and science course land will be released in August. A series of electronic books have already been filed and are under review. Publishers and content providers have been invited to submit new materials for consideration by the California Network of Learning Resources. The deadline for submission is June 15 to allow a review in time for the year next academic year.

The second phase of the initiative, currently under development, will make the new digital texts available for all grades. Interactive Content and include a comprehensive state website displaying the books available are the long-term goal.

The initiative has the potential to save millions of dollars California schools. It is estimated that a school district with about 10,000 high school students could save $ 2 million through the use of textbooks free for download from the only science and math classes. In 2008, the state of California spends 350 million U.S. dollars on textbooks and other educational materials printed. Following the adoption of digital textbooks for a significant proportion of this money will be available for use in other areas.

Another advantage provided is that as digital textbooks are easier to update, it will be easier for students to learn about technological advances and discoveries today as they occur. Textbooks conventional paper tend to be updated on average every six years – which could mean that in the back end of the cycle students could miss six years of information.

It also seems likely that the alternative, interactive learning opportunities could Once entering the system is operating.

Now, you may note that at no time in his announcement did Governor Schwarzenegger was mentioned some of Amazon's electronic book reader – or any of its competitors for that matter. In fact, that it would be possible for schools to benefit even without computers or laptop computers as teachers could print the material and still come out much cheaper than a conventional textbook. So why the Internet buzzing about news of this "good" for the Amazon?

Well, the latest addition to the family ebook reader Amazon Kindle, DX Kindle, released June 10 – just five days after the announcement of Governor Schwarzenegger. This is a larger version of Amazon recently published Kindle 2 with a 9.7 "screen instead of a 6" one. Amazon has been touted as ideal for reading newspapers, magazines and – wait! – Textbooks academic.

Amazon has already entered into agreements with at least three academic publishers and some higher education institutions have publicly announced that make the Kindle available to its students. All things considered, Amazon is better positioned to take advantage of a sudden introduction of new technology Digital academia that most of its competitors.

That's not to say that all things have their way, of course. Sony have partnered with Google for large collection of books on Google in the public domain available to users of its electronic book reader PRS, a clear sign that neither Google or Sony are willing to forgo potentially huge market and profit ebook to the Amazon without a fight. Other competitors also exist and it will be interesting to see how they respond to market developments in general and academics in particular.

Meanwhile, it seems as if Gov. Schwarzenegger's plan for innovative educational future California is likely to increase sales of the Amazon reader, Kindle accessories and books from Amazon Kindle store. No doubt other states will consider similar plans and the academic sector of the book market could heat up soon. By Of course, the area of academic textbooks is only one segment of the market – but it seems the road. Also Amazon and its competitors offer an ideal opportunity to "Get 'em while they're young" and establish brand recognition and loyalty that can influence purchase decisions in later life.
